In response, the EU has introduced the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, a regulation providing data protection and privacy rights for individuals, including the right to consent and object, the right to be forgotten, the right of access, rectification, and portability, the right to erasure, and the right to restricting of processing.
All organizations that collect the personal data of individuals in the EU must comply by May 25, 2018, regardless of if the businesses are located in the EU. Data controllers that fail to comply with the GDPR are subject to a fine equivalent to 4% of global annual turnover.
